How We Choose Products

Last updated: November 5, 2026

Here’s the process behind the picks on SmartHomePicks, and its limits.

1. Start with a problem

We begin with an everyday annoyance, like a crowded counter, slow prep or a front door you can’t keep an eye on, and look for products that address it.

2. Look for widely available products

We feature products sold on Amazon.com so you can read the full listing and check the current price yourself.

3. Match the product to its listing

We check that each pick’s name matches its Amazon listing, then write notes using the listing and manufacturer information. We don’t assume features from the product category.

4. Flag what to double-check

Every pick includes a short “check before you buy” note, such as wiring and system compatibility for thermostats, or whether a doorbell needs a subscription to save video.

5. Spread picks across price levels

Where we can, we show options at different price levels. The labels are relative to other picks in the same category and are not prices.

What we don’t do

We haven’t tested these products ourselves, and we don’t publish ratings or customer reviews. Read our Editorial Policy and Affiliate Disclosure for how we handle independence and commissions.
